Rose  REVOLUTION COMPOST

Weekly food waste pick-up (and finished compost product return) by bicycle.

This is your chance to not only reduce the amount of waste being trucked to landfill, but to reduce the amount of fossil fuels that would otherwise be used to truck this waste to landfill or industrialized compost facilities.

Revolution Compost uses bicycles to provide this year-round service and recycles your kitchen scraps into rich organic compost.

How it Works:

For a one-time start-up fee, we provide you with a ten count supply of BAG TO EARTH compostable food waste bags, (Approx. 1.5 gallon size) Click here for details: BAG TO EARTH FOOD WASTE BAG Optionally, we can also provide you with a convenient undercounter basket and lid to accomodate this bag:  BAG TO EARTH BASKET

Your initial fee also includes a Iris Stor-It-All-Pro Series Medium Storage Tote, 6.75 Gal capacity, labeled by us for Revolution Compost pick-up. This tote is securely latched and is suitable for outdoor storage.

Each week, or bi-weekly if you choose, we come by with our cargo bicycles and trailer in tow, and transfer your food waste from your tote to our bikes and containers. Compostable bags may be placed in your tote for our pick-up or compost may be placed directly into the tote for our transfer.  Our riders will empty your tote and scrape clean loose materials.  You retain your tote for future pick-ups.

What area do you cover?

How much does it cost?

$8.00 weekly or $10.00 for pick-up every other week.

For every 5 totes of food waste picked up by us (Approx 30-35 gallons) you receive one free 20 quart bag (5 gallons) of Intervale Compost delivered to your door!

For a detailed description of our fee click here: Fees

Pick-up is scheduled on Tuesdays between the hours of 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. You need only identify a spot for placement of our outdoor bin for pick-up and we'll take care of the rest.

We bring your compostable waste to places that want to make lots of compost. We return finished compost to you!

Why Compost?

The importance of composting cannot be overstated. In Chittenden County, food scraps and soiled paper account for nearly 46 % of commercial trash. Not only do food scraps take up a lot of landfill space, they produce greenhouse gases as they decay. For every ton of food waste that is composted rather than dumped in the landfill, nearly a ton of greenhouse gasses are kept out of the atmosphere

What can be Composted?

Note: CSWD drop locations accept a wider array of materials than some collectors. For the foreseeable future we will be working with the list as noted below.  Revolution Compost is presently researching additional locations for our drop-off which may be more selective, and reserves the right to amend this list accordingly.

Food and Beverages:

If it's edible, we can compost it! This includes:

  • Fats and Oil
  • Meat and Bones
  • All Fish and Seafood, including shells
  • Fruits & Vegetables
  • Eggs and Egg Shells
  • Milk, Cheese, and all other Dairy Products
  • Bread and Grains
  • Coffee and Tea
  • Condiments (salad dressing, ketchup, etc.)

Farm Manure:

  • Most types of animal manure are accepted
  • No cat, dog, or human waste

Paper:

Please recycle as much as you can and compost only small amounts of food-soiled paper including:

  • Uncoated paper plates, cups, & cardboard
  • Paper napkins, towels, bags, & table covers
  • Coffee filters and tea bags
  • Wood BBQ skewers

We cannot accept:

  • Plastic coated paper products
  • Glass, metal or plastic
  • No human or pet waste

What about biodegradable or compostable plastic?

We cannot accept these products.

Per recent regulations, our compost partners will no longer accept "compostable" or "biodegradable" plastic bags and "greenware". Despite claims by many compostable and biodegradable plastic manufacturers, bioplastics do NOT degrade. Yes, bioplastics are made from plants which is a renewable resource. However, some research suggests that the production of bioplastics emits an equal amount or more carbon dioxide than the production of normal plastic, and there is a large amount of energy that goes into farming, fertilizing and fermenting corn.

What happens to my compost?

In the short term our riders will be delivering food waste to CSWD drop-off facilities.

We hope to establish other locations which can directly benefit our community to include local farms.

Our long-term goal would be to create a complete cycle, from food to compost to soil and back to food again, all without the use of fossil fuel dependent vehicles and machines.  We are open to suggestions and assistance.

Can I count on your service year-round?
